Several injured in police firing and clashes
Guwahati, Feb 10: Several people were injured today when police fired at a mob in Kakopathar area who were protesting against the alleged killing of a suspected ULFA linkman in army custody on Sunday last in Assam's Tinsukia district.
More than 15,000 people from 50 villages tried to storm the Kakopathar police station and set it ablaze. The mob had resorted to stone-pelting at passing vehicles and security personnel, official sources said.
The police opened fire to control the mob leaving several persons injured.
Residents of Kakopathar, from where Mahanta hailed, and nearby villages had blocked National Highway 52 since Monday protesting against his death and the army's "false" allegation that the deceased was an ULFA linkman.
The villagers claimed that Mahanta was an innocent man without any adverse police record but he had been picked up, tortured and killed by the army.
The villagers also dug a drain across the highway that link Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh with the rest of the country and was squatting on the road.
The protestors were demanding that both Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Governor Lt GEN (Retd) Ajai Singh should personally assure them that there would be no more killing of innocent villagers in the name of counter-insurgency operation.
